Replaying a situation repeatedly—wondering why the mind cannot let go—is a common experience. Known as rumination, this pattern involves recurring thoughts about a negative interaction or event, often creating a sense of being stuck in a loop. The loop can be interrupted. With practice, change is possible.
The phrase “overthinking is under-feeling” often rings true. When excessive thinking occurs, the mind is attempting to make sense of an experience. Without space to process the emotions connected to that experience, the nervous system can become dysregulated.
The nervous system does not distinguish between three elements: the thinking mind, the feeling body, and time. Its goal is integration and release in the present moment. Avoidance of difficult emotions— such as sadness, shame, or anger —can lead to disconnection from the body, with awareness shifting primarily into thought. This imbalance reinforces the cycle.
Awareness is the first interruption point. When a repetitive, unhelpful thought pattern arises, consider what emotions remain unprocessed. Identify the feelings. Allow brief contact with those emotions. From there, release and move forward.
The only constant in life is change. Thought patterns and behavioral responses can be reshaped. A sense of agency can be reclaimed. Control your thoughts and reactions + change your life.
